Olive oil: Oil rich in vitamins and minerals

In antiquity, olive oil was known for its culinary virtues as well as for its cosmetic and medicinal properties. An emblem of purity and of life, the olive tree symbolized wisdom and immortality because of its strength. Some trees were more than a thousand years old. Roman women treated their hair with olive oil. Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, used olive oil mixed with fine white sand as a cosmetic.

Sodium hydroxide, an alkali extracted from natural salts

At first, old lye soap was made using lye from wood ash or potash that contained alkaline elements. When the wood (beech) containing this alkaline element was no longer readily available, another type of lye or caustic, extracted using a chemical process, was used. Since sodium hydroxide is an alkali, it has the same saponifying property as caustic. However, it is extracted from natural salts.

Beeswax, a hardener

In antiquity, beeswax was used to seal pots and jars containing food. The Egyptians used it to embalm the dead. Today, ointments and emollient creams contain beeswax. This also gives the soap a firmer texture.

Cocoa butter, a softener

A fat, cocoa butter is often used to treat burns and scrapes. In tropical countries, it acts as a lubricant and as a softener. Cocoa butter is also used to soften soap and to moisten the skin.
